Exploring the lived experiences of children in Irish primary schools

What is it like to participate in CSL?

Developing national policy in education informed by the voices of children, parents teachers and principals

Over the next six years, the CSL team has been carrying out a national longitudinal cohort study of primary schooling in Ireland. To do this, we will be consulting with children, parents, teachers, principals, early years educators and grandparents to generate information about children’s lived experiences in school.

This information will inform curriculum development and wider educational policy.

Read below to learn what it is like to be a participant in CSL!

Children

“Research” sounds like a big word, but it can actually be a lot of fun! We’re asking you to put on your researcher’s hat and help us learn about you and your school through fun activities with our CSL team.

We will either have a fun workbook we’ll ask you to fill out with your class, or some games that you can play with us and a friend. We might also ask you to talk to us, draw some pictures and take photos about the things that matter to you about school!

What do you think are the best ways to find out what children think of school?

Children's School Lives Family

Families

Whether this is your first or last child to attend primary school, we look forward to learning about your child, your family and your experiences in primary schools in Ireland.

We’ll be asking you to participate in interviews and/or fill out a questionnaire each year.

Schools

We’re excited to work together with teachers, early years educators, and principals in their primary schools and early years settings to gain important knowledge and information from multiple perspectives on education in Ireland.

If you are a teacher we will ask you to tell us about your classroom and teaching practices. If you are a principal, we will be asking you about school leadership and school practices.

Research Design

The CSL study uses a cross- sequential longitudinal design, producing a rich
set of mixed methods data. This is generated through a nationally representative quantitative study and in-depth case studies of a sub-sample of schools.
